Yaounde, Cameroon's capital, is over 100 years old and full of stories, and travel security experts share their tips and tricks. On 1 August 1967, after the French invasion and occupation of the western Cameroonian sector, France and Cameroon united in a referendum to create the United States of Africa (USA) in the Great Sector of East Cameroon, which was then under the control of France. After the French invasion and occupation of the North Cameroon sector, the French Cameroon force lost its sovereignty over the South Cameroon, but did not gain independence due to the British occupation.

The irregular chain of mountains, hills and plateaus known as the Cameroon Mountains stretches from Mount Cameroon to the coast. Cameroon is located in Central Africa and borders Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Ghana. The starting point for the climb of Cameroon is in the town of Yaounde, where you can rent a guide or equipment.

With a decent infrastructure, travelling is much easier than in many parts of Africa, so renting and driving your own car is no problem. You will need a visa for Cameroon and can apply for a firearms import permit, but it is highly advisable to obtain a visa before you enter. If you feel you need it, you should bring an international driving licence or a valid passport for your country of origin.

If you are travelling by land, it may be possible to obtain a visa for Cameroon from a neighbouring country, but it is recommended to take care of this matter before travelling.

The internet is widely available in Cameroon, and there are several telecommunications companies offering mobile data packages, so that we can stay in touch with our friends and family during our visit to this fascinating country.
